Hand Cut 1930’s-Style Wooden Jigsaw Puzzles

~History~

The following featured hand-cut wooden jigsaw puzzles are patterned after the jigsaws popular in America between about 1910 to 1940.  In the early 1930’s, with the country in a great depression, wooden jigsaw puzzles, especially those featuring figural pieces, hit their zenith of popularity.  Wealthy collectors bought them for pleasure and for entertaining guests, while the middle classes enjoyed renting them from local “libraries,” which operated much like today’s video stores.  The middle classes were also the puzzle makers – especially women.  For a time, puzzle cutting was a booming cottage industry, as ladies could buy or borrow treadle scroll saws and manufacture puzzles at home.  It was also during the early 1930’s that die cut cardboard puzzles were first introduced, and became popular as promotional giveaways.  While the cardboard puzzles made it possible for even the poor to enjoy this popular pastime, they did eventually spell demise for the great wooden jigsaw puzzle fad of the early 20th century.

                                                                      Carrie at Work

Hello, I’m Carrie, and I’m Glad to Have You Here!

You’ve reached the Three Squares a Day art blog, which is a fundraiser for a national American club startup called LetsPlayHistory.org/.com, or LPH for short.   LPH is a centralized history education and resource website ultimately dedicated to supporting the reenactment arts in America.  LPH achieves this mission by providing cohesive support services to all those who directly, or indirectly contribute, including history practitioners and enthusiasts of every kind.

So whether you enjoy actual reenactments, or whether you prefer museums, antiques, history investigation and research, vintage movies, old cars, or genealogy – to name a few possibilities -  LetsPlayHistory has services you’ll love to use!

During startup, LetsPlayHistory will be introducing new services as fast as a 1.5-person volunteer crew can manage.  We are currently working on the LPH automated calendar system (see Event Calendars page for updates).  This calendar system will support an unlimited number of users who can post their history-related events free of charge, making it possible for even startup hobby groups to recruit and promote.

For complete details on this startup club, and the national and local community services LPH will provide, please take a moment to peruse this blog, and be sure to visit the preliminary http://www.letsplayhistory.org/ home page.  We also have a free How-To guide for reenactment club formation and event planning at: www.squidoo.com/playhistory .

My Fundraising Goal

The bottom-line, 2-year fundraising goal for LPH start-up is $120K above initial LPH, and living expenses  (the $120K will primarily go towards greater promotions, and full time webmaster assistance).  The percentage of art proceeds that will go toward the LPH project will be anywhere from 10% to 100% per sale, depending on time-verses-income.

I am committed to keeping you updated on LPH progress via this blog, and through the club newsletter (sign up below).  Throughout the year, if you have ideas or other resources for contributing toward LetsPlayHistory.org, please don’t hesitate to use my Contact form to send me a note.  I love hearing from you!

In every way, Thanks So Much for Your Support!
