Horses Through History & Pony Express Startup

Announcing the first LPH chapter of Horses Through History, which will head up interstate history reenactments that involve horses.   The first reenactment proposed is a volunteer coast to coast Pony Express relay.

RIDERS WANTED!

If you’d like to be involved in any way, come join our Yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LPHhorses/.  Also subscribe to our free newsletter, and we’ll keep you posted on event progress.

According to the National Pony Express Association, their annual 10-day event receives enthusiastic community support all along the 2000 mile original route, between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, CA.   Is that not fun?!   The NPEA also sells pony express mail delivery service along the route.

The LPH coast to coast event could be similarly patterned, and I hope, tutored by the NPEA

Last year the NPEA had an overflow of participants, with 500 riders each going 3-4 miles is all.  Compared to the original Pony Express where riders averaged 15 miles on each horse, you can see there’s a high interest level among horse owners.  This makes a similar coast-to-coast event seem very feasible.

What I have not been able to determine by online research, is if there has ever been a coast to coast Pony Express ride before.  If you find anything, let me know.

The choice of route will be greatly influenced by the first volunteer riders.  I propose to have the relay end in Oregon, with the route going through the northern part of the US.  Perhaps starting somewhere between the states of Pennsylvania and Virginia, heading on up past the great lakes, through IowaSouth Dakota, the Montana/Wyoming border, and Idaho

Your input is welcome!
