Recommend Your #1 Favorite Classic Movie
I was born in 1964 – the final year of the Baby Boomer generation. By the time I hit kindergarten, TV was in full color, and low-budget 1970’s movies were on their way in. It wasn’t until about 1975, at age 11, that I got my introduction to the classic cinema: I became mesmerized by a Saturday night television program called Monster Theatre.
Monster Theatre was a once-a-week showcase of nothing but old black and white horror flicks that thrilled my young mind. I’d set my alarm for midnight, and rise with excitement to watch some of the worst, and some of the best old movies ever made.
But it wasn’t until approximately 1996, at age 34, that I found my most prized movie treasure. Outside of my Monster Theatre days, I never was much of a night owl, so I had taken to auto-recording interesting, and unfamiliar titles that would air during the wee hours of the morning. On one occasion I inadvertently captured what would instantly and permanently become my favorite movie of all time: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE , starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier (1940, Turner Entertainment Co.).
I fell for the gracious etiquette. I loved the joyful “mood,” and the quaint charm. I also admired the high quality of moral conviction in the lead character, Elizabeth. The fact that it was all brought together in a lavish Victorian setting with a social plot well worth pondering, only served to bring it all home to my heart in an instant.
Nowadays I am always on the lookout for other great old movie treasures that might move me like Pride and Prejudice has.
That’s why I would love for you to recommend one!
